CAMHI, at a symposium on promoting mental health in early childhood education

As part of the training activities of Ms. Panagiota Vasileiou, Education Consultant for University-Educated Preschool Teachers (PE60) of the 2nd Cluster of Schools, Directorate of Primary Education of B’ Athens, an in-person training seminar took place on Monday, November 10, 2025, at the Chatzikonsta Foundation in Marousi, with the participation of the Child & Adolescent Mental Health Initiative (CAMHI). The seminar focused on:

“Promoting Mental Health and Well-being in the Kindergarten School Community.”

CAMHI participated in the seminar with a presentation titled “Child & Adolescent Mental Health Literacy” delivered by CAMHI psychologist Giouli Balikou. During the presentation, detailed reference was made to the training program for teachers, specialized educational staff, and special support staff developed by CAMHI, as well as to how educators can actively contribute to creating a school environment that fosters mental resilience, empathy, and communication.

The participating educators showed particular interest in the topic, recognized the importance of ongoing professional development, and shared their reflections and concerns regarding the daily challenges they face in the classroom, especially in managing the emotional needs of children.

A key message emphasized by all speakers was that caring for the mental health of preschool-aged children lays the foundation for their future development and well-being. Early intervention at this stage is more necessary and effective than at any other, as it plays a decisive role in shaping healthy relationships, developing self-regulation skills, and fostering a positive attitude toward learning and life.

The workshop concluded with a dialogue and exchange of experiences, reaffirming that promoting mental health is a shared goal for everyone working in education and in supporting children from their earliest steps.

Many preschool teachers are committed to participating in the Child & Adolescent Mental Health Initiative’s “Basic Training Program for Teachers, Special Education Staff, and Special Support Staff,” which is implemented by a nationwide network of public sector mental health organizations and professionals, in partnership with the Child Mind Institute (New York), and exclusively supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) as part of the SNF Global Health Initiative (GHI).
