The Youth Engagement Scheme

Listening to children’s opinions about matters that concern them is a necessary but demanding process. For this reason, the Child & Adolescent Mental Health Initiative includes a programmatic component coordinated by Giorgos Moschos, former Deputy Ombudsman for Children’s Rights, called the Youth Engagement Scheme (YES). The YES Youth Engagement Scheme has been approved by the Ministry of Education, both for 2022-23 and for the years 2023-24 and 2024-25 (No.Prot.F.2.1/MG/96512/105996/D7, 17/9/2024), including for the organization of discussions and dialogue activities in schools. About YES

The YES program encompasses the establishment of 5 Youth Advisory Groups in the cities of Athens, Thessaloniki, Alexandroupolis, Ioannina, and Heraklion. These groups are linked and work closely with CAMHI's hub centers. The members of the groups are teenagers aged 13 to 17, selected from different schools and contexts, to include as many perspectives and experiences as possible. The members of the groups meet once a month with experienced coordinators and facilitators, communicate with each other, discuss, give their opinion on issues related to the mental health of children and adolescents, and plan and participate in various actions in their schools or other places. Each teenage member of the team has at least one educator-partner supporting related actions in school or other settings, aiming to listen to the opinions of other adolescents and to have a wider interaction with larger groups of teenagers on selected topics. Once a year, several teenagers from all groups, and their educators, meet up and discuss child and adolescent mental health topics with CAMHI staff members. YES aims to continuously and systematically inform the CAMHI team with the views and suggestions of adolescents on how to improve the mental health care they receive.

Mental health services should not be a luxury or a privilege for a few, but should be a given for everyone who needs them, starting from childhood.
