October 10 – World Mental Health Day: Caring for Parents, Caring for Children

On the occasion of World Mental Health Day (October 10), the Child & Adolescent Mental Health Initiative (CAMHI) is offering a new, practical Guide to Parental Wellbeing.

World Mental Health Day reminds us each year that there is no health without mental health. This year, our focus is on parents and caregivers – those who support, inspire, and guide children every day.

When parents are supported, children thrive. The mental resilience, stability, and emotional availability of the adults caring for children form the cornerstone of the entire family’s mental health. Self-care, stress management, communication, and balancing the needs of both child and parent are not luxuries – they are essential.

To mark this important day, CAMHI has created and is offering a practical, evidence-based Guide to Parental Wellbeing, full of advice, insights, and tools grounded in scientific research. The Guide is authored by Theano Touma, Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist and Scientific Advisor at CAMHI, and is aimed at any parent who wishes to care for their own mental health to meaningfully support their child.

Children’s mental health begins with the adults around them.

Let this year’s World Mental Health Day be a reminder that taking care of yourself is an act of care for others.
